What Is Elbow Contracture?
Elbow contracture is a condition in which the elbow joint loses its normal range of motion, specifically the ability to fully straighten (extend) or bend (flex) the elbow. The loss may be mild (10 to 20 degrees of extension) or severe (greater than 30 degrees of loss in any arc of motion), and it has a significant functional impact on activities of daily life, work, and sport.
Contracture arises from pathological changes within the elbow joint and surrounding soft tissues. It is classified as intrinsic (arising from within the joint: articular damage, loose bodies, and osteophytes) or extrinsic (arising from outside the joint: capsular contracture, heterotopic ossification, and skin and soft tissue tethering). Mixed contracture—involving both intrinsic and extrinsic components—is most common after significant elbow trauma.
Dr. Mohamed Ali treats elbow contracture at DHA-licensed facilities in Dubai using arthroscopic and open surgical release to restore functional elbow range of motion, reducing pain and allowing return to work, sport, and daily activity.
